Kiiwi

Plays realistic mechanical keyboard sounds as you type, with customizable switch recordings, mouse clicks, and scroll effects.

Kiiwi is a macOS menu bar utility that plays mechanical keyboard switch sounds as you type, including on a MacBook's built-in keyboard. It uses recordings of real switches rather than synthesizing keyboard clicks, and pans sounds left or right according to each key's position.

Customize the sound of typing

  • Choose from 36 keyboard sound packs, including Cherry MX, Topre and IBM Model M sounds. Switches can be previewed in an interactive browser playground.
  • Enable optional key-release sounds, eight mouse-click packs and six scroll-tick styles.
  • Adjust separate volume levels for typing, clicks and scrolling, or mute Kiiwi system-wide with Shift-Command-K.
  • Continue typing while changing headphones or other audio output devices.

Typing stats and practice

Kiiwi tracks daily keystroke counts, a 14-day history, typing streaks, sustained words per minute and the apps where you type most. These counts stay on the Mac and can be exported as JSON or reset. A built-in typing test offers timed or word-count sessions, with a Zen mode that fades out distractions. Share cards turn typing statistics into images.

Permissions and purchase

System-wide sounds require macOS Accessibility permission. According to the developer, Kiiwi discards individual key events without logging typed content and stays silent in protected password fields. It connects for licence verification and software updates; activated copies can work offline for up to 14 days between successful checks.

Kiiwi requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later and supports Apple silicon and Intel Macs. The signed, notarized app is downloaded from the developer's site. A three-day trial is available without a payment card. The current $4.99 launch price is a one-time payment covering two Macs, with lifetime updates and a 14-day refund policy; the advertised post-launch price is $6.99.
