Muro
Free live video wallpapers for Mac desktops, lock screens, and screen savers
Muro is a free, native macOS app for playing looping video wallpapers on your desktop, including across multiple monitors. Its growing gallery includes more than 500 wallpapers, many in 4K, and you can import your own videos. Unlike a simple wallpaper picker, Muro also controls when and where animations play.
Choose, import, and rotate wallpapers
- Wallpaper gallery: Browse and preview videos by category, resolution, and frame rate. New wallpapers appear in the catalog without an app update.
- Personal videos: Import video files; Muro converts them to HEVC for playback. It also includes a section for Apple's aerials and Dynamic Wallpapers.
- Playlists and schedules: Cycle through selected wallpapers in order or randomly, using intervals or times of day.
- Multi-display controls: Choose different wallpapers for each screen, with separate desktop, lock-screen, and screen-saver options where supported.
- Menu bar controls: Pause, resume, change, or adjust wallpaper playback without reopening the main window.
Playback and power controls
Muro uses macOS hardware video decoding and can pause playback when the wallpaper is hidden, during Low Power Mode, or on low battery. Optional settings include playing only when the desktop is clear, pausing after a chosen duration, and limiting video playback to 30 fps. Downloaded wallpapers can be removed or moved to another storage location.
Compatibility and installation
Muro runs on macOS 14 Sonoma or later on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. Animated lock-screen wallpapers and screen savers require macOS 26 or later; older supported versions can still use desktop video wallpapers.
Download the DMG from the developer or install via Homebrew. Because the app is not Apple-notarized, macOS may require you to approve its first launch in Privacy & Security.
Muro has no account requirement, ads, or paid features. Its source code is publicly viewable under the PolyForm Shield license, which restricts redistribution; wallpaper videos have separate licenses.
