Recordly
Create screen demos with automatic zooms, smooth cursor animations, and a built-in video editor.
Recordly is a free, open-source screen recorder and video editor for product demos, software walkthroughs, and tutorials. It records a full display or individual app window, then helps turn the capture into a more focused presentation with automatic zoom suggestions, animated cursor movement, and customizable backgrounds.
Automatic zooms and cursor effects
- Add zoom regions manually or use suggestions based on mouse activity to draw attention to important actions.
- Smooth the cursor path, adjust its size, apply motion blur, and customize click animations.
- Present the recording over built-in or custom backgrounds, with adjustable padding, rounded corners, shadows, and aspect ratios.
Timeline editing and audio
Recordly's timeline lets users trim recordings, change playback speed, crop the frame, and add text, image, or shape annotations. It can capture system audio and microphone input, add extra audio tracks, and place webcam footage in a configurable overlay bubble. Projects can be saved as .recordly files and reopened for further editing. Community extensions can add extras such as cursor effects and presentation frames.
Exporting and Mac compatibility
Export recordings as MP4 videos or looping GIFs, with options for output dimensions, quality, and GIF frame rate. Recordly requires macOS 14.0 (Sonoma) or later for its ScreenCaptureKit-based Mac capture workflow, including system audio and microphone recording. It also runs on Windows and Linux, although capture behavior varies by platform.
Recordly is distributed through GitHub Releases, is free without a paid tier, and publishes its source code under the AGPLv3 license. It is an Electron-based desktop app rather than a native macOS application.
